Government assistance for Aged Care at home – The process
Many people find the process of getting at home care for themselves or parents a confusing and overwhelming process.
We have put together a summary to help you determine your next step. We are always happy to guide you through the process if you need any assistance.
It is important to remember that to receive government funding for at home aged care, you must apply through the My Aged Care program, which is managed by the Australian Government.
Here’s a step-by-step guide to applying:
01. Check Eligibility
- You must be 65 years or older (or 50+ for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people).
- You must need support to live independently at home.

02. Get an Assessment
You must be 65 years or older (or 50+ for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people).
- An ACAT (Aged Care Assessment Team) assessment will determine if you qualify for a Home Care Package (HCP) and if you qualify for help, the level of financial support that will be provided. There are four levels of financial care that may be awarded.
03. Apply for Services
Once assessed, you will receive an approval letter and be will placed on a waiting list.
For Home Care Packages, you may wait several months depending on availability.
04. Choose a Provider
Once you receive your Home Care Package assignment, you must:
